Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes

Ingredients
  • Sliced russet potatoes
  • 1 onion sliced in the form of rings
  • Salt and pepper
  • 3 tbsp. Butter
  • 3 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ tsp. salt

Directions
  • Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C. Coat a casserole dish with butter and layer the potatoes at the bottom of the dish
  • Top with sliced onions and add more potatoes. Season with pepper and salt
  • Melt butter in a medium-size saucepan. Mix salt and flour. Stir constantly for a minute
  • Cook until the mixture has condensed and stir in cheese. Continue stirring until it melts.
  • Pour cheese over potatoes and cover the dish with an aluminium foil
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 1 ½ hours.
  • Serve hot

  • 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • Active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ tsp. Salt
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tsp. Cornmeal
  • 1 tsp. water

Directions
  • Combine 2 cups flour, salt and yeast in a large bowl. Stir in 2 cups warm water and beat well.
  • Knead the dough on a dusted flour to make an elastic and smooth dough
  • Shape into a ball after kneading for 8 to 10 minutes. Place the dough in a greased bowl. Cover and let it rise
  • Punch the dough and divide it into half. Roll each half into a large rectangle. Roll up from one side. Moisten the edge with water and seal. Taper the ends.
  • Grease a large baking sheet and sprinkle with cornmeal. Place the loaves and seam side down on the prepared sheet. Beat egg white with a tsp. of water. Cover with damp cloth and let it rise.
  • Make 3 to 4 diagonal cuts with a very sharp knife on the top of each loaf. Bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees F for 20 minutes. Brush with egg white mixture and bake for 15 more minutes. Remove from baking sheet and cool on a wire rack.

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 ½ cups bread flour
  • 1 tbsp. white sugar
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbsp. Water
  • 1 ½ tsp. bread yeast

Directions
  • Place sugar, salt, bread flour, yeast and water in a pan and knead it into soft dough.
  • Punch the dough. Roll dough on a floured surface into 16x12 inch rectangle.
  • Cut the dough in half and roll each half tightly
  • Roll back gently and forth to the tapered end.
  • Place the dough on greased cookie sheet. Make sure to cut diagonal slits across loaves. Cover and let it rise for 30 minutes
  • Preheat an oven to 375 degrees F. Mix egg yolk in 1 tbsp. of water. Brush the contents over top of loaves
  • Bake for 25 minutes in an oven until golden brown.
